I'm ready for a DARN GOOD DOG, Chicago!
👀 Plan longer outings for quieter times of day. If you live near an Irish pub (as I once did and the “fun” started at 10:30 am!), you might consider driving your dog to a forest preserve or renting a Sniffspot instead.
⚕️If your vet has prescribed short-acting anti-anxiety meds for stressful situations like thunderstorms, car rides, fireworks, etc., this might be another time your pet would benefit from their support. Check with your vet before using if you have any doubts.
😌You can also use DAP (dog appeasing pheremones) products made by Sentry and ThunderEase to help keep your dog calm - they come in collars, sprays, and plug-in diffusers.
🎤The best option to combat loud noises is to use brown noise recordings. The most recent research finds that continuous sound at lower frequencies than the triggering sound does the best job of “masking” it. Here is a Youtube link for hours of brown noise.
🚫 If you haven't already trained a solid “Leave it,” let's chat! Alternatively, some of us trainers don't train a Leave It, because instead we train our dogs to check in with us when they encounter unexpected novelties outside so we can tell them if they get to have it or not. If you have a super scavenger who has a history of eating ANYTHING they find, then muzzle training is a must for their own safety when the chance of litter is high. We can help with that as well.😊
